The University of Adelaide, as part of its commitment to academic excellence, commenced a review on its minimum English language proficiency standards for international coursework students in late 2015. The review concluded in July 2016 and recommended that the Minimum English Language Requirements would be increased to an IELTS of 6.5 with effect from 1 January 2018. The increased entry standard was predicated on academic and reputational grounds and to ensure that our international student experience at the University is an enriching one. With a higher entry requirement, our students will now have enhanced linguistic skills to actively, productively and confidently engage in more complex tasks expected during their studies. Importantly, the increase in the University’s Minimum English Language Requirement: Reflects the increasingly competitive pool of applicants seeking admission into the University of Adelaide; Reinforces the University's endeavours to recruit the best and brightest students in the global market; Supports the industry and professional bodies expectations that graduates should have an English proficiency commensurate with role in the organisation; Equips our students with greater ability to flourish academically AND Supports the University’s 'Small-Group Discovery Experience pedagogical approach.
The University is aware that the amendment to the English Language Proficiency (ELP) requirements for 2018 may impact on outstanding offers that have been made to students who commence their University programs in 2018. This may include students who are completing pre-entry or pathway programs for a semester 1 or semester 2 entry in 2018. The University has therefore decided that those offers made up to and including 27 July 2016 with previous ELP requirements, will be honoured by the University. Application Category | Offers dated on or before 27th July 2016 | Offers dated after 27th July 2016 | 2018 Direct Admissions | IELTS 6.0* | IELTS 6.5* | Pathway Entry via Foundation Studies and Degree Transfer Program (DTP) | Situation A: Deemed to have met the University’s ELP when DTP or approved Foundation Studies has been successfully completed | Situation B: Deemed to have met the University’s ELP when DTP or approved Foundation Studies has been successfully completed | Situation C: Student will need to provide an IELTS 6.0* if student failed to successfully complete Foundation Studies or DTP on first attempt | Situation D: Student will need to provide an IELTS 6.5* if student failed to successfully complete Foundation Studies or DTP on first attempt |
*Higher ELP requirements may apply for some programs. Students wishing to take Academic English GEAP or PEP pathway programs for award programs commencing in 2018 (including those deferring their award studies to 2018), should now check the English Language Centre website to view the entry requirements. Additional information can be provided through the University’s Recruitment and Admissions Services. The University looks forward to working with your office to deliver an enriched study experience for our future students.
